Mamma Mia, Chapter 8
Mamma Mia: Chapter 8
“And you feel this will be a proper appointment for both of them?” Mia asks. “What if you take my son under your apprenticeship, and I will take yours.” Mia suggests, “My son could learn how to gather relevant information and use it correctly. Your son -under me- could learn how to lead and gain some insight into what goes on in the higher workings of the syndicate. It will give Arthur all the information he needs to understand what is going on, and it will give Carlo a piece of the truth and how to properly conduct himself. Arthur as the informant, Carlo as the diplomat.” At first, Kent seems a bit apprehensive, but she also mentions how useful it would be to keep Carlo and Arthur close to each other and allow them to go on certain missions together. Then Kent appears more invested in the proposal. He offhandedly mentions his son’s loss of time to the conspiracies. Mia agrees with Kent while mentioning her own son’s disgust with the young Kent’s new obsession. “With all of this, the two can set aside their current qualms and truly understand how the syndicate runs from two different perspectives.” She concludes.
Major General Kent agrees. He mentions how happy he would be for the exchange and his hopes that his son’s training would also give her some benefit. She smiles. “When do you think Carlo would be ready?” He responds with a fact: within the month. He reminds her about their schooling at the moment. Mia nods and draws up a contract. Kent and Mia sign it and Kent kisses Mia’s hand as a respectful gesture. He thanks her for the opportunity. She warmly smiles and places her hand on her communicator. “Shall we inform our young men about their futures?”

“I can’t believe they did this to us!”
Arthur slams his communicator into the nearest wall. The wall cracks under the force as the communicator remains unscathed. Arthur pulls the communicator away and watches the wall repair itself. He rears to slam the communicator again, but Carlo stays his hand. Instead, the communicator falls the floor. It rolls into the shattered glass and spilled drinks. The kitchen around them is a mess. Carlo gingerly picks up Arthur’s communicator and tosses it into a cleaning hub. As the hub activates and begins its routine, Carlo sits Arthur down on a kitchen stool. “Arthur, dude, it’ll be fine. They are just making sure we got good experience after schooling.”
“She’s has her hand in my life. Again. And more than it should be!” Arthur grumbles. “She wants me under her, just like everyone else is.”
Carlo keeps one hand on Arthur’s shoulder as he sends commands to the internal housecleaning system. “Come on, don’t be like that. I highly doubt your mom is that malicious.”
“You don’t understand, Carlo.” Arthur stares at him blankly. “Her position makes her ambient. She’s everywhere. She controls aspects of everything.” He looks out the floor-to-ceiling window to the mountains beyond. It is a view Arthur wants to envelop himself in. “I just need to be away from her. Or I need to find a way to oppose her. Something to get her hands out of my life.”
Carlo breathes a bit in relief as the house looks clean and Arthur seems calmer. “Look. We still have three weeks of schooling. Do you think we can make it through and deal with our apprenticeships later? Does that sound good?”
Something clicks in Arthur’s head. A smile crosses his face. His body relaxes more than Carlo thought Arthur could. “You know, you’re right. Perhaps I’m being a bit reactive.” He smirks to Carlo. “Let’s make these three weeks a riot.”
