Making a Diddy

  "Hey, Ani. You should right a little song, diddy thing for your update videos."

  Amethyst plops herself down on the corner of my desk as I finish another part of my city wall in Minecraft. I hadn't really thought about the update video (it was Tuesday, 21 July 2020) and I couldn't bother to think about it. The hot day had me chained to my office chair and the nearby fan to sit and relax.

  "Did you hear me?" Amethyst asks. 

  "Yeah, yeah." I answer. I get to a stopping point on my progress and look at her. "I mean, I could. I don't know how good the audio will be, but I could."

  "I mean, think about it. You need a song about making progress, and we haven't been able to find a suitable one. Why not make it?" She runs into my room and grabs my ukulele. "Besides, you can use this thing."

  "My ukulele?" I raise an eyebrow. "That's gonna be a really simple song then."

  "So? It'll still be a song. And you can make progress on it when you feel like you want to!" Amethyst smiles in that giddy, hyper way. 

  I keep my puzzled look and grab my instrument from her hands. "I could give it a shot. Like I said, I don't know how good the audio will be. This mic is at least five years old. Maybe more."

  "Doesn't matter. Write it. Do the things!" Amethyst says as she runs off. 

  I'm left stunned. What the heck was that all about? She isn't normally this excitable and giddy. I look to my ukulele and my journal. Well, something small wouldn't hurt. Might as well try. I take a pencil to my journal and begin to figure out the words.

Story 1    The holy incense follows the disciples out of the gilded temple hall. The Shepherd continues to swing the burner as he repeats the old mantras of the faith. The last disciple leaves and the burner settles as the Shepherd contemplates the list of rituals he must perform before the sun sets. The ritual implements have to be cleaned, the sacrifices burned, the acolytes of the temple purified, the-   "Shepherd Thanatos, we have a situation that requires your attention." An acolyte of the temple calls from below the altar. The Shepherd sighs and recites his calming mantra: "What I am about to do has not been approved." The Shepherd walks slowly behind the altar and finds the symbol on the side as he recites "chao regnat" under his breath. The symbol glows and opens a trap door under the altar.
