What's Up with Cleaning Videos? A Follow-Up

 Hey there!

I was listening/half-watching more cleaning videos to help me focus on my own work. I know, it's kind of odd, but somehow it works for my brain. I still have yet to figure it out.

But while I'm at it, I have a few more things I've been questioning when I do give myself a brief moment to actually watch them.

  • Why do they have so much stuff? Granted, I'm watching this around Christmas, but still! They have so many random possessions! There is so much going on to the point where some of them hurts my eyes. Especially the ones with makeup vanities! Or whole sections of their bathroom with enough brushes to paint canvases! I honestly can't believe they need that much.
  • What is with the aesthetic of these people's houses? I really don't understand the complete ecstasy that is a plain colored room with plain decorations and furniture. Maybe it is where I live or what my particular family is like, but our rooms either have a more colorful palette or -at the bare minimum- have different pieces of decor that add some sort of difference to the room. Why would you want an all-white kitchen, or a cream-colored living room with a grey couch? I just don't get it.
  • Is it worth the cost? Is it really worth the cost of doing these videos? I've noticed that a good chunk of the cleaning videos are filmed in bedrooms, and especially children's bedrooms. Assuming you are the parent and not the older child occupying that room, why would you film a place that is supposed to be your child's private sanctuary to get away from the world? Why would you expose your living space to begin with? In my opinion, houses are the sanctuaries away from the world. I don't think I would bring cameras into many rooms of my house unless those rooms were made to be shown. And it wouldn't even be rooms. It would probably be one. But these cleaning videos... it's just a weird thing to think about.

I've been sitting here and watching these, trying to figure out why I am so critical of what I see. I think I have boiled it down to three ideas.
  1. A desire to have similarly nice spaces in my own house.
  2. There is a portrayal of simple living within these spaces that appeals to me.
  3. There is a sense of luxury that I would like to enjoy myself, especially with the excess food or excess room decor.
Maybe that is something I can kind of resolve in 2023. In the meantime, I'm going to work my hands back toward my crochet hook. Still a bit to do
