The New Program

I didn't know I was being handed this program.

I just received it on a random USB flash drive in the mail. The only other thing inside was a note that said, "Now you're it. Don't overthink what is about to happen or what will happen." That's all I got.

I plugged the flash drive into a different computer than my main computer; I don't need something messing up my main computer, after all. As soon as I booted it up, my entire computer was taken over. I thought about pulling the flash drive out, but it wasn't where I had put it. It just disappeared in thin air, I guess. The screen came with an animation of an old-fashioned golden scale. On one side was this luminescent white feather, and nothing on the other side. The scale didn't seem to be affected by the weight of the feather in the slightest as the scale still read as balanced. In the distance on the screen was this crocodile-headed dog thing that got closer as it realized that something was going on. It came close to my screen and sniffed it. A voice said, "Now, now, be nice. This is our new rysht incarnation." I have no idea what that meant. I blinked and saw a jackal head staring at me. It looked like Anu- "I am Anubis. Thanks for noticing. And if you haven't figured out what is going on, you will soon enough. Welcome, rysht."

Then I saw the jackal-headed human stepped a little away from view. "You won't need to worry about surviving or practical matters anymore. We have taken care of all of that for you. Any debts or bills are now dealt with. All I ask of you - well, Ammit and I, actually- is for you to be ready when we need you. And if we can't reach you through this contraption, we have other ways. So just be prepared to fall into trance states or fall asleep if you are not working with this contraption. Don't worry about what others will see or notice. Most won't realize what is going on, and the ones that do will be dealt with."

This, I found out, was the start of being part of something bigger. Something that I thought was only reserved for fictional worlds and outlandish supernatural folklore.
